Took a nice ride today down the A7 south from Edinburgh towards Langholm, Dumfries & Galloway.

Approaching Langholm, up on my left I saw a large obelisk on a hill a couple of miles away so I decided to go and investigate.

At the junction with the track leading up to the obelisk is a very interesting rusty metal monument & further investigation revealed this to be a monument to the poet & political activist Hugh MacDiarmid.

Continuing a mile or so further up the rough track I finally came to the obelisk, known only as ‘The Monument’, commemorating the life & achievements of Sir John Malcolm.

Nice to learn a bit of history on my motorcycling trips.
