There are many more photographs than kilometres cycled this morning from my 24 km ride into the local nature reserve of Brunssummerheide.

I have passed this way many times before and it’s always different, depending on the weather, the season and sometimes because of the land/forestry management changing the lay of the land.

Today’s featured image is of the new footbridge over Roode Beek (Red Brook) right in the heart of Brunssummerheide.

The water here gets its reddish-brown hue from underlying peat bogs.

This bridge has replaced a shorter bridge nearby, which was dangerously rotten when I was here last autumn.

Many of the cycle/walking tracks here are very soft white silica sand and very difficult to cycle through in places, meaning I had to walk with the bike sometimes.

On the way home I passed the large industrial sand pits near Heelerheide.

Here pure silica sand is extracted primarily for glass manufacture.

I really enjoy wandering through these local ‘Natuurmonumenten’ on the bike, such a tranquil, colourful environment.
