This morning’s 25 km cycle ride was a fairly hilly circuit to the west of Heerlen.

I left home before 08:00 and it was already sunny and warm, ideal cycling weather.

I’m trying hard to improve my fitness, having cycled only 326 km this year and it’s proving more difficult than expected.

There is very little flat terrain here in the south of Limburg, and Heerlen is surrounded by hills.

There is no easy way out of town, with long, fairly steep inclines to negotiate in every direction, before I’ve had a chance to properly warm up.

Once out in the countryside the rolling hills continued.

Periods of extreme effort are rewarded with great views and effortless free-wheeling downhill.
