This morning’s cycle ride was a fairly hilly 48 km circuit to the west of Heerlen.

I left home just before 08:00 in warm sunshine, something of a contrast to the torrential rain and severe thunder storms of the past few days.

Once out into the Dutch countryside there was much evidence of the destructive force of these storms.

Crops were crushed in fields, many of which became flooded.

Also the narrow country lanes were awash with liquid mud washed down from the fields.

I think, even with a few sunny days ahead, it will take some time for the land to dry and for local farmers to clear the excessive mud from the lanes.

Once on the larger roads and cycle paths progress was better and I managed to avoid the worst of the dirty country lanes.
